VINICIO CAPOSSELA Fri 29th + Sat 30th January 2010 - Union Chapel - London

Compton Terrace, Islington, N1 2UN www.unionchapel.org.uk

Tube: Higbury and Islington station

A larger-than-life character on the Italian music scene, Vinicio Capossela (born in Hannover, Germany, 1965) can boast an extraordinary career dating back to 1990. Capossela’s world evolved around the American underground culture and the road myth (namely Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski and Tom Waits) as well as the Italian exoticism embodied by the legendary Luis Prima in the US or Renato Carosone in Italy. Capossela’s early works displayed a real passion for Italo-Americanness, for the kind of entertainment portrayed in Martin Scorsese’s films. His style is strongly influenced by Tom Waits (Capossela repeatedly recorded his songs with the help of Waits’ guitarist, Marc Ribot), though it also draws from the traditions of Italian folk music. Capossela’s lyrics are highly original and are often inspired by literary sources such as John Fante, Geoffrey Chaucer, Louis-Ferdinand Cèline, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and others.

A rare chance to see him in two gigs in a row in a very intimate and evocative venue to appreciate at the best his talent.

l Giovanni Allevi, Fri 19th March 2010 @ Queen Elizabeth Hall

Southbank Centre

A great return in London after one year. Giovanni Allevi is one of the major uncontaminated composers and pianists of the present-day international scene. His compositions outline the precepts of a new Contemporary Classical Music through an educated and emotional language that distances itself from the dodecaphonic and minimalist experience to reaffirm a new rhythmic and melodic European intensity. For his intellectual engagement in redefining the boundaries of a new Italian-origin European Contemporary Classical Music, Giovanni is praised by the President of the Republic of Italy Giorgio Napolitano, the Pope Benedict XVI and many cultural and artistic celebrities.

l MODENA CITY RAMBLERS Wednesday 12th May 2010 @ Dingwalls

www.dingwalls.com Camden Lock, London, NW1 8AB - Tube: Camden Town

Modena City Ramblers are an important and consolidated phenomenon on the Italian rock music scene. They are the most important Italian band that mixes folk and “world” influences with ska and rock. They hold concerts before huge audiences and have sold more than half a million copies of their CDs in the last twelve years.

The band made up of people who share a dream: music is one of the paths that could lead to Utopia. This belief has come from the lessons of the masters of folk music along with the philosophy of the punk revolution.

This music is rich in colour. There’s the mandolin drawn from Italian folklore and the Celtic tin whistle. There’s Woody Guthrie’s guitar and the Latin and African percussion of the slave workers of the two Continents. There’s the power of the electric guitar and the drums and there’s also the rhythm of the violin and bouzuki and the strength of singing influenced by punk. There’s also love for The Pogues, The Clash and Mano Negra and, in the lyrics, passion for Latin-American contemporary literature, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Luis Sepúlveda. The result of all this is the so-called Celtic patchanka.
